Importing Library Catalog Records into RefWorks

RefWorks is a bibliographic management tool that enables you to save, organize and use your citations for assignments, research papers, and other academic work. Most of the article databases offer an option to mark citations and "export to RefWorks." What isn't so obvious is how to get records from the library catalog into RefWorks. The process is easy once you've done it a couple of times.

Here's how:

• Log-in to your RefWorks account.
• Search the catalog for books, videos, etc.
• Save the records by clicking the "Save to List" button.
• View your "Saved Records"
• Check the "End Note/RefWorks" and "Send list to Screen" buttons then hit "Submit"

By using the "Send List to Screen" option, an .html version of the records will look like this:

• Highlight and Copy all the text on the page
• Next, go to your Refworks account choose the "Import" option under the References heading.


• For the Import Filter/Data Source option pick Innovative Interfaces
• For the Database choose the Endnote/RefWorks format
• In the text box below, paste the records from the .html page and click the import button.

In case you want to start the semester off with a fresh attitude towards library research, you might want to check out the general orientation tours and open workshop schedule.

General orientation tours are open to anyone who wants to know more about the library. The times will be posted and all you do is show up at the reference desk on the second floor. If you have a specific interest you can relate that to the librarian scheduled. Generally, the general tours are offered the first 2 full weeks of the new semester. The schedule should be ready soon.

Open workshops are offered throughout the semester and the topics vary from general database searching to using the MRI marketing database. Some workshops are offered more than one time a semester and are open to anyone. The workshops take place in room 101 downstairs and around the corner from the student lounge.

You can also learn more about Refworks by attending one of the Refworks sessions offered.

If you like to find information and use it on your own check out the IL wiki and library research guides for help with specific subjects. Also, we have created a few tutorials and uploaded them to YouTube. (eventually this intervening page will go away and everything will be on our youtube page.)

Alkek Flickr and YouTube Accounts

Alkek Library now has a presence on Flickr. Some pics have been added and more will soon follow. We plan on using the Flickr account to show photos of events and things going on in the library. You can see what's up at the library by going to the flickr Alkek Library website. We would love to see your comments on the photos.

Also, if you are interested in YouTube, you can find a couple of videos posted by the library. We have a good video on exporting citations to Refworks you can watch. There are also a few videos about searching databases. Here are the search results from YouTube searching Alkek Library.

We plan on adding more videos and photos this summer, now that things are somewhat slower. Feel free to suggest a video you would like to see on YouTube.

Google Scholar & Refworks

Google Scholar is Google's way of searching scholarly literature in one place. It searches accross different subject areas and if searched through the Alkek Library's database page, will link to our electronic resources. Refworks is a bibliographic management tool that you can use when conducting research using the library's databases and catalog. If you are not familiar with Refwoks, the library offers workshops throughout the semester. You can also take their tutorial and quickly learn how valuable the resource is. As a member of the Texas State Community, you can use this management tool.

However, if you are familiar with both of these research tools, you will be interested to know that you can use Google Scholar and Refworks together. Simply go the "Google Scholar Preferences Section" and down at the bottom of the page see "Bibliographic Manager" and there you can choose Refworks from the pull down list.

Then all you have to do is use Google Scholar through the Library Databases page to do your research. (find it under "G" or "General." Just keep in mind that not ALL of the library's resources are searchable through Google Scholar, only the resources made available by publishers working with Google, and the library catalog WorldCat, to make their content searchable via the Internet. There are still a lot of journals that are indexed in proprietary databases which can only be searched individually.

it's saturday and i am answering email questions, and it is hard because the ppl i would normally go to ask about something are all gone. :(

just out of curiosity, when ppl are trying to use Refworks from home and the direct export from the database does not work, what is the likely reason?
if you know i'd love to know too.

and where is bioone? i can't find it on the databases page--i found it in the locating periodicals link though.
